Whistle Blower
Several federal and state laws have been enacted to protect an employee when the employee has reported the employer's illegal acts or conduct. These laws, often referred to as "whistle blower" laws, are designed to protect a "whistle-blowing" employee from retaliation by the accused employer. For example, an accused employer is prohibited from firing or demoting a "whistle-blowing" employee.
Examples of whistle-blowing laws are the Whistleblower Protection Act - protecting whistle-blowing employees of the federal government, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 - protecting whistle-blowing employees of publicly traded companies and the Military Whistleblower Protection Act - protecting members of the military.
