Welding Rods

Welding is a process by which two separate pieces of metal are joined together by using a third compound to act as the "glue" that holds the two pieces together. In welding, the "glue" or compound is in the form of a rod that is placed between to two pieces to be joined and then heated to its melting point. As the molten compound cools, it adheres to the two separate pieces and transforms them into one piece of metal. The heating process, or welding, creates fumes, sometimes filled with particulate, and gases that emanate from the welding rods. All of these can be and often are inhaled by the welder.

Many welding rods were manufactured using manganese which, in toxic quantities, has been associated with neurological injury. In particular, toxic exposure to manganese has been associated with symptoms and side-effects that mimic Parkinson's disease. Recently, welders who have developed neurological conditions believed to be caused by exposure to manganese, have sued manufacturers of welding rods. The lawsuits claim that the manganese-filled welding rods caused the welders' illnesses.
