Trusts

A trust is a form of property ownership under which the Settlor (the creator of the trust) transfers property to the Trustee (an individual or an institution such as a bank or trust company) who holds and manages the property for the benefit of the Beneficiary (as designated by the Settlor).

There are many different kinds of trusts and they are designed to accomplish various goals. For example, charitable trusts benefit charitable organizations; Age 21 Trusts benefit minors until they reach age 21 at which time the assets in the trust are usually distributed; revocable trusts (sometimes referred to as inter-vivos or living trusts) are designed to manage property before and after death; and insurance trusts are designed to hold life insurance policies and collect the proceeds at death for the benefit of designated beneficiaries.
