Patent Law
Patent law is intended to provide legal protection to inventors and others who have used their creativity, knowledge and expertise to create new and innovative products and processes. Once granted, a patent is a form of short-term (usually 17 years) monopoly to produce and sell the patented product or process. This short-term monopoly is intended to encourage inventors to invest their time, talent and resources to develop innovative and cutting edge products, medicines, and processes. Sometimes the holder of a patent believes that the patent is being infringed upon. This means that someone is using, producing and or selling the patented product, medicine or process without authority to do so. The United States Patent and Trademark Office is responsible for issuing patents. There is a formal application procedure for obtaining a patent and there are lawyers who specialize in patent law and patent disputes.
