Hormone Replacement Therapy

Until July of 2002, hormone replacement therapy was believed to be a beneficial treatment for the symptoms and effects related to menopause. In fact, many scientists and doctors believed that hormone replacement therapy provided protection from such age-related ailments as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

It is estimated that over 6 million women used hormone replacement therapy per year. This includes the use of drugs like Prempro®, Premarin®, Premphase® and Provera®. In July 2002, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) halted its study of approximately 16,000 women who were using HRT. In reviewing its data from the study, WHI observed that women who were using HRT had a 26% increase in the number of breast cancer cases.

Studies have also shown an increased incidence of ovarian cancer, gall bladder cnacer and non-hdgkins lymphoma in women who have use HRT medications.
