Hormone Replacement Therapy
About HRT - Types of HRT
There are two types of traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - single hormone therapy and combination hormone therapy.
Single Hormone Therapy
Single hormone therapy is usually estrogen-only therapy and was/is most often prescribed to women who had undergone hysterectomy, i.e., women without an intact uterus. Popular estrogen-only drugs include Premarin® and Estradiol. Since estrogen-only therapy in women with an intact uterus is associated with a 6-8 greater times risk of endometrial (uterine) cancer, estrogen-only therapy is not recommended for women who have an intact uterus.
Combination Hormone Therapy
Combination hormone therapy is estrogen-plus-progestin therapy and is most often prescribed to women who have an intact uterus. Progestin is believed to protect against an increased risk of uterine cancer and therefore, in combination with estrogen, is believed to counter estrogen's adverse effects on the uterus. Popular combination hormone therapy drugs include Prempro®, Premphase® and Femhrt®.
