Hormone Replacement Therapy
About HRT - HRT Drugs

Prempro®
Introduced in 1996, Prempro® is a combination (estrogen plus progestin) HRT drug manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Prempro® is prescribed to women to reduce the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

Premarin®
Premarin® is an estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) drug manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Premarin® is prescribed to women to reduce common symptoms of menopause or hysterectomy such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. As the most widely prescribed estrogen replacement drug on the market, Premarin has been available for over 50 years and is administered to nearly 10 million women. Premarin® is available in both tablet and vaginal crème forms.

Provera®
Provera® (medroxyprogesterone), manufactured by Pfizer, is a progesterone commonly prescribed to women for menopausal symptoms including secondary amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding. For women with an intact uterus Provera® is prescribed in combination with an estrogen drug such as Premarin. Provera is one of the most popular hormone replacement therapy drugs on the market.

Premphase®
Like Prempro®, Premphase® is a combination hormone replacement therapy drug manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst. Made from conjugated estrogen and medroxyprogesterone, Premphase® offers women relief from common menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness and hot flashes. Premphase® contains a higher dosage of hormones than its counterpart Prempro®.

FemHRT®
Femhrt®, manufactured by Warner Chilcott, is one of the newer forms of combination hormone replacement therapy - entering the market in 1999. Containing both estrogen and progestin, Femhrt® is prescribed to menopausal women to control hot flashes and for osteoporosis prevention. Femhrt® contains the estrogen ethinyl estradiol, and the synthetic progesterone norethrindrone acetate, a progestin that has been found to cause fewer side effects than the progesterone in other combination HRT drugs like Prempro®.

Estradiol®
Estradiol is an estrogen replacement (ERT) drug sold under the brand names Estrace, Climara, Estraderm, Estring and Menostar. Estradiol is prescribed to treat the usual symptoms associated with menopause (hot flashes, vaginal dryness, etc.). Estradiol is available in pill, skin patch and vaginal crème forms.

Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (MPA)
Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is a progestin, i.e. a synthesized progesterone-like compound made in a laboratory. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), represented by drugs such as Provera®, Amen®, Curretab® and Cycrin®, is the most common progestin used in hormone replacement therapies.
