Hormone Replacement Therapy
HRT Health Risks - Breast Cancer

Invasive (Infiltrating) Lobular Breast Cancer

One of the more recent studies of the association between invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy was published in the June 2004 issue of Cancer. The study, conducted by a team of researchers headed by A. Tjonneland, demonstrated a 3.53 times increase in the relative risk of developing invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer associated with the use of hormone replacement therapy. The data also demonstrated a 2.10 times increase in the relative risk of developing ductal breast cancer associated with the use of hormone replacement therapy. The data also suggested that the continuous use of progestin hormone replacement therapy was associated with an increased risk of developing invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer as well as ductal breast cancer. Example of such continuous therapy include regimens that consist of both single hormone replacement therapy - such as Provera® and generic medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) - and combination hormone replacement therapy - such as Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®.

Another recent study, published in the June 25, 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association demonstrated an increased risk of developing both invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer and ductal breast cancer among women who used combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy. The risk of developing either invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer or ductal breast cancer increased with the duration of hormone therapy. For those using combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy, such as that provided by drugs like Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®, for 5-15 years, there was a 3.7-fold increase in the risk of developing invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer and a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of developing ductal breast cancer. For those using combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy, such as that provided by drugs like Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®, for over15 years, there was a 2.6-fold increase in the risk of developing invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer and a 1.6-fold increase in the risk of developing ductal breast cancer.
