Hormone Replacement Therapy
HRT Health Risks - Gall Bladder Cancer

Gall Bladder Cancer

The Gall Bladder is a small organ that is located beneath the liver. Often described as pear-shaped, the Gall Bladder produces bile, a chemical that aids in the digestion of food. Bile produced by the Gall Bladder travels through the bile duct (a tube leading from the Gall Bladder) to the liver and then to the small intestine. Bile aids in the digestion of fat.

Cancer of the Gall Bladder is a uncommon and, because the Gall Bladder lies beneath the liver, is often difficult to detect and diagnose. Additionally, it may produce few and/or only mild symptoms during its early stages. Gall Bladder cancer appears to be more common in women than in men - each year approximately 7,000 cases are diagnosed with almost 60% of these in women.

Gall Bladder cancer is usually classified into one of three stages:

  • localized, resectable - the cancer is confined to the Gall Bladder and can be removed surgically;
  • localized, unresectable - the cancer is confined to the Gall Bladder but because of complications, it cannot be removed surgically;
  • advanced - the cancer has metastasized, i.e. spread to other sites in the body.
Gall Bladder Cancer and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

In 2002, the results of a case control study conducted in Italy demonstrated that women who had a history of using hormone replacement therapy (including drugs such as Prempro®, Provera®, Premphase®, Premarin, Estradiol, FemHRT® and the generic medroxyprogesterone acetate) were three times more likely to develop Gall Bladder cancer than women who had never used hormone therapy. The study, reported in the International Journal of Cancer, also indicated that the longer hormone therapy was used, the greater the risk of developing Gall Bladder cancer.

Although the incidence of Gall Bladder cancer is rare - approximately 4,200 cases in women diagnosed annually, the findings of the Italian study "…provide the first epidemiological evidence of an association between HRT and Gall Bladder cancer." [Drs. Silvano Gallus and Eva Negri, co-authors of the study] The study was funded by the Italian Association for Cancer Research.
