Hormone Replacement Therapy
HRT Health Risks - Breast Cancer
Ductal Breast Cancer
The data published in the June 2004 issue of Cancer (described above) demonstrated that there is a 2.10 times increase in the relative risk of developing ductal breast cancer associated with the use of hormone replacement therapy. This data suggests that the continuous use of combination hormone replacement therapy, such as that provided by drugs like Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®, more than doubles the risk of developing either invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer or ductal breast cancer.
The study published in the June 25, 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (described above) demonstrated an increased risk of developing both invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer and ductal breast cancer among women who used combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy. The risk of developing either invasive (infiltrating) lobular breast cancer or ductal breast cancer increased with the duration of combination hormone therapy use.
For those using combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy, such as that provided by drugs like Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®, for 5-15 years, there was a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of developing ductal breast cancer. For those using combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy, such as that provided by drugs like Prempro®, Premphase® and FemHRT®, for over 15 years, there was a 1.6-fold increase in the risk of developing ductal breast cancer.
