Consumer Protection

Consumer protection is a very broad concept and covers many types of consumer transactions. All states have enacted consumer protection laws that regulate the business practices of those who sell goods and services to consumers.

Many states have consumer protection departments that regulate, usually through licensing and inspection, business that deal with consumers. For example, many states require home building and repair contractors to obtain a license to provide building and repair services to homeowners.

Some states have specialized consumer protection laws and agencies to deal with particular types of transactions. For example, so-called "lemon laws" protect consumers who have purchased a defective automobile and many of these states have separate agencies to deal with "lemon law" complaints.
