Consumer Fraud
Many states have enacted laws that are designed to protect consumers from fraudulent business practices. Many of the laws apply to the retail sale of goods to consumers. Some apply to services such as contractors, builders, and other building trades. The laws are designed to protect consumers from such practices as "bait and switch" - where a retailer advertises a product at a deeply discounted price (the "bait") and when the consumer arrives at the store, the product is no longer available and the consumer is offered a more expensive product (the "switch").
